Salad Spinner Sunday

Yesterday I planted sweet potatoes and more tomatoes. To make way for the tomatoes,
I harvested the lettuce in bed 2 and boy do we have a lot of lettuce to eat!

I think there are five or six different kinds of lettuce here. The wet cool spring weather has been great for lettuce. Good thing we have our OXO Salad Spinner to get it all clean and dry.

After getting it all clean, we put it in storage bags and then in the fridge.

Now we're set for all you can eat salad this week, and there is still plenty more out in the garden. Yum.

Intercropping Peppers and Tomatoes Before The Rain

It is supposed to rain all week here in northern Kentucky. Although I still have a lot to plant in the vegetable garden, at least I got some tomato and bell pepper plants put in before the rain.

In both cases, I planted them in beds that already have leaf lettuce and other things in them.

In the below pictures of bed 5, you can see Buttercrunch lettuce alternated with newly planted pepper plants with onions in the back.

I harvested the outer leaves of the lettuce before planting the peppers and pulled out some Black Seeded Simpson lettuce plants that were in their way. Even though these lettuce plants were small, we can eat these leaves as well.

There are other young leaf lettuce plants in this bed that will have some room to get bigger before the peppers need the space.

Bed 3 that has had broccoli and lettuce growing for a while now, but I tucked tomato plants in with the lettuce. The tomato plants will soon be supported with a stake and weave set up. The lettuce will be harvested before the tomato plants need to room. I really like maximizing my space by using a piece of ground for more than one vegetable with different growth habits.

Most of the beds need weeded, which I hope I can do between rain showers. Of course I won't want to touch any of the veggie plants while they are wet for risk of spreading possible fungal spores. Even though the meteorologists say it will rain every day this week, the showers are going to be scattered. Hopefully I can get out in the garden a little and take some more comprehensive pictures.
