Did that title confuse you? If not then maybe you thought I was going to write about how you should compost your trash; food scraps, dryer lint and paper goods. That is true, but what I am writing about in this post is actual junk!
I found all of this trash IN our big compost pile when I dug out the compost to add it to the raised beds. I took pictures of it all but I wasn't originally planning on sharing them with you. However, I was going over my past posts and found one where I made fun of the previous owners of my house for all of the junk that was under the deck. I may have been able to blame that on other people, but this compost pile was all me.
I do have explanations for some of it.
The tea-light candles came from the Jack-o-Lanterns we composted. I wonder if this candle came from the same Jack-o-Lantern that gave us our accidental pumpkins. The broken end of a garden fork also makes sense because I used to keep a fork in the pile to have it handy for turning. That's a bad idea because the wooden handle rotted off and I guess the fork stayed in the pile!
The broken ice scraper makes sense because I used to keep it out by the compost pile to scrape out the guinea pigs cages. Their spent bedding makes great compost! Also, I can see why I found half rotted plastic bags because I often carry home coffee grounds and vegetable scraps from work in plastic bags. Believe me, your co-workers will look at you strange when you ask if you can have their banana peels.
So I guess after thinking about it, I know why most of the junk ended up in my compost pile. The only thing I'm stumped over is that I found a bunch of large nails and metal rods. Let's blame the previous home owner again.
I guess the moral of this story is that if you are lazy and sloppy like me, put a garbage can out by your compost pile!
Keep Growing!
