Growing your own garden plants from seed is a rewarding experience for any gardener.
The issue becomes how to raise seedlings without a greenhouse and I have written quite a bit about seed starting in the past.
Over the years I have created many different ways to hang florescent lights over seed trays.
Most of these were big and bulky and not so attractive. Sometimes they were even nailed to the walls and ceiling in our basement. Last year we began renovating that basement space to become more of a finished living area so the big ugly seed lights had to go and I didn't start anything from seed. I didn't like that very much and had to spend a great deal on buying plants instead of starting my own from seed.
So this year I decided to create a new light stand that looks more like a piece of furniture and is portable (I can move it into the garage when we're not using it). This is what I came up with:
It has three shelves, each capable of holding four standard plant trays with three shop lights above them. Right now I am only set up for the top two shelves and will only expand to the bottom shelf if needed.
I found out several years ago that my light stands needed to be cat-proof when our cat attacked the heirloom pepper plants! This years stand is covered with bird netting and has panels in the front that attach to the main frame with magnets.
In my next post, I will show you exactly how I made this grow light stand, but for now I need to get started planting those seeds!
Spring will be here soon! Aren't you excited?!
