I think his work is good for mental exercise, but I don't take much of it too seriously (nor should anyone else -- he's not a particular expert in what he writes about... more of a foodie pop culture icon).

The main problem I have with him is that he has an agenda. Although I've read his books, I find something like Tom Standage's "An Edible History of Humanity" more useful than much of what Pollan writes. Standage is also a journalist, but he sticks to journalism.

When I hear Pollan talk, if I stop and think about what he says then a lot of it doesn't make any sense -- at least not the way he frames it.
