I haven't seen these on my plants, But it sounds like they are nasty little buggers.

I don't think I have those, or at least I haven't seen them. Have you ever tried grinding up the horseradish plants until they are liquid and spraying it on the tomato plants? I wonder what it is about it that repels the beetles??

thanks for some helpful, compassionate insight on cabbage worms. i think i'll continue to pick them off my cabbage. It seems they are not laying larvae on the purple cabbage (Ruby Ball) as much as on the green cabbage (Derby Day). Maybe that is just because its a little later to mature and the butterflies only lay on plants mature enough to support their hungry larvae. We'll just have to see. Hopefully I'll have hunted them all gone by then. Good luck to all.
