I know this is completely outdated, but I wanted to add an fyi.

The idea about birds smelling people on their nests and abandoning them is completely bogus. I worked monitoring a bluebird box trail at one point, part of which was to count the eggs/babies, which often meant pulling them out.

A nestling bird is an amazing thing to have in your hand.

Your nest's been through quite a bit of trauma beyond you just touching it, so I can imagining her getting spooked (or just giving up) anyway.
